Allegations of Theft at Gloucester Township Fire District 5: Questions of Transparency

On June 25, 2025, three separate sources reported to GTObserver that the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office visited Fire District 5 (Lambs Terrace) in Gloucester Township and allegedly removed two individuals in handcuffs. Efforts to obtain a statement from the Prosecutor’s Office were initially unsuccessful. At their office, Officer Sirin (#385) indicated he would email the Public Information Officer (PIO) and copy GTObserver, but no such email was received. Instead, Officer Sirin advised submitting an OPRA (Open Public Records Act) request for further details.

Researching Past Records

Unable to get immediate answers, GTObserver investigated one individual named by sources: Anthony J. Dimitri, listed as Fire Chief on the Fire District 5 website.

Public court records from Gloucester County revealed an indictment charging an “Anthony J Dimitri” with forgery, specifically “false authorizing of government documents and/or checks,” with alleged fraud exceeding $75,000.

Challenges Accessing Court Records

GTObserver sought additional court records through the New Jersey Judiciary’s process, distinct from OPRA, using an email associated with this publication. When the records were due, a court representative asked if they would be used for a news story. After explaining GTObserver’s role as a community news outlet, the representative stated that before releasing, the records required approval from a director (unspecified) and that only “some” information could be released due to the news story intent. This raised concerns about transparency, as public records should be accessible regardless of their intended use, per New Jersey Court Rule 1:38.

Limited Documents Released

Despite requesting a broader set of records, GTObserver received only the grand jury indictment, PTI agreement, and PTI conditions. It remains unclear whether additional records would have been provided had the request not been linked to a news story.

In September 2024, Dimitri entered a Pretrial Intervention (PTI) program, a form of probation allowing case dismissal upon successful completion, set to conclude in September 2027. These documents are available for review:

Recent Developments

Multiple sources report that Fire District 5 is being required to obtain a forensic audit, although GTObserver has not been able to independently verify this or confirm Dimitri’s involvement in the June 23 incident. The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office provided the following statement:

“On Monday, June 23, 2025, the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office was notified by the Gloucester Township Police Department about allegations of theft by an employee of the Gloucester Township Fire District 5 (Lambs Terrace Fire Company). The investigation is active and ongoing. No charges have been filed at this time. No arrests have been made at this time. No further information will be released at this time. Inquiries regarding the employee’s status should be directed to the Gloucester Township Solicitor. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Matthew Dunlop of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office Special Prosecutions Unit at (856) 225-8472.”

Call for Transparency

GTObserver encourages the community to stay informed, attend township meetings, and contact the Gloucester Township Solicitor for updates on Fire District 5. Public records and open investigations are critical to maintaining trust, and we will continue to seek answers.
